DescriptionThis is a condition of debilitating fatigue. It will usually present with any number of the following symptoms: sore throat, muscle or joint pain, headaches, unrefreshing sleep, impaired memory or concentration, and malaise. It will usually last at least six months and can have a duration of years with periods of remission and relapse. Medical and psychiatric conditions that can produce fatigue must be ruled out. SymptomsVery intense debilitating fatigue. Some people may be bedridden, and mild activities such as housecleaning or going for a walk may need a recovery period of 2-3 days. Others have alternating periods of fatigue and normalcy. Some people may be able to perform in a limited fashion at work or home, but easily fatigue from it. It may force some to give up their jobs and stop many other activities. Very often, it may begin gradually, with the fatigue slowly growing until it becomes overwhelming. It may also follow viral infections like influenza and gastroenteritis, appearing with sudden onset. Others can start the fatigue with preexisting fibromyalgia. Here are a list of criteria that can be part of the symptomatic picture:
CauseThe Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) was first thought to be the infectious agent. This is because a high percentage of patients had a history of mononucleosis and EBV is in a family of viruses associated with mononucleosis that may create lifelong latent signs and symptoms of CFS that are similar to that of mononucleosis. There have been studies that have linked chronic fatigue and fibromyalgia. It is also thought that CFS patients may have candida, food hypersensitivities, or a history of hepatitis. Thyroid deficiency may be a contributing factor. The exact cause is unknown. |
